The first term of sustainability has been delving into topics such as; our current food system, food equality, and animal rights. Through writing a paper on the slow food movement, which was inspired by The Omnivore's Dilemma, I was able to understand one of the university studies goals, Diversity of Human Experience. The idea of Diversity of Human experience became easily applicable to everyday life when I began to understand that we all live very different lives whether it be from personal choice, or economic standing. After writing a paper on the Slow food movement, I gained a much clearer understanding of the diverse choices and situations that our world faces. Writing a paper on the slow food movement, a movement that restricts itself to a particular social standing, I was able to see the limitations of human experience. Human experience, something that should be fair and equally distributed to all, is not so because of the eliteness that such a healthy and more sustainable food movement requires. I realized the limitations that some face when it comes to human experience, in regards of my paper, there are people that are unable to experience things such and gourmet foods, or locally grown vegetables, something small but an inequality. The slow food movement, as discussed in my paper is only accessible to those of higher income which allows them the plentiful options of organic produce, and locally farmed meat. The “foodies” and farmers market regulars are introduced into another world, a world where they are picking from the most organic fruits and vegetables. The “foodies” make food there way of life. However, as those priced foods are unattainable to a sum of our population, those people are living a different life and experiencing different issues of others. Another way that food connect to the diversity of human is experience is through “food deserts”, something I learned through this class. Food deserts are something that forces people to live a different lives than those that are in an area of a supple food supply. Those living in food deserts are unable to experience the abundance of fresh foods that other can easily access, which leaves them to a negative disadvantage, therefore leading a different life. The diverse financial state of our world, and more specifically our country does not allow for every individual to have access to the same grade of food which influences lifestyle. Diversity of human experience gained new meaning to me after being exposed to it in something as simple as food. Food is an extremely important aspect of all of our lives that is something to be seen as black and white, easy, simple, straightforward. However because of the diverse situations of all of our lives, I learned that it's something much more complicated. Because of the good or poor food quality that our country is exposed it can heavily affect the quality of lives, and this is something I learned through writing this essay and the first term of class. The Diversity of human experience means a lot more to me now than it did before. Sustainability, in the aspect of food, and animal rights is something that is directly related to human experience.
